Decorated on the pear-shaped body with a large roundel depicting two soldiers, one holding a sword and the other a long staff detaining their prisoner who is holding a gilt horn, below a band of grisaille and gilt leafy scrolls around the neck; and a cover, possibly Dutch-decorated

Lot Essay

This design has sometimes been called 'The Arrest of Christ', but as Hervouët and Bruneau comment in La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p. 264, this scene is unlikely to depict Christ, since the figure is holding a horn or trumpet; see ibid. fig. 11.16 for a saucer from this rare service.
