Lot Essay

For a slightly larger oval dish with this design, see Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p. 220, fig. 9.76, where the authors inform us that this is taken from an engraving by Martinet, although only part was used by the Chinese artist. They suggest that it depicts Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, King of Naples, who used to take pleasure in going into the countryside and offering wine to the peasants.
