Nineteen Ivory Netsuke
Edo-Meiji Period (19th Century)
The first a crouching figure trying to capture a tanuki which has just metamorphosed itself from a kettle, signed with incised and stained characters on the left leg Shugyoku; the second a dragon and tiger confronting one another on a cloud, the eyes inlaid in horn, signed Yu; the third a standing demon dressed in an animal skin, holding a bottle in one hand and a tai [bream] in the other, the fur well incised and stained, the arms and legs forming several natural himotoshi, one eye inlaid in horn, the other missing, signed Tomomasa; the fourth a man with a dog holding a geta in each hand; the fifth a Nio wrestling with a Buddhist demon; the sixth Kinko Sennin riding on a carp and reading a scroll, the fish's eyes inlaid in horn, the scales boldly carved and stained; the seventh a tengu teasing a cat with a ball attached to a thread whose other end is tied around his long nose; the eighth an oni repairing a giant shoe, perhaps Shoki's, the prominent eyes inlaid in horn, signed Hidemasa, old damage and repair; the ninth a woman hitching up her skirt, her head with a coral bead, with signature Tomochika; the tenth a heavily stained model of a bat with its wings folded resting on a branch of reishi fungus; the eleventh a kappa with a cucumber; the twelfth a quail, millet, eyes inlaid in dark horn; the thirteenth a woman beating a mokugyo and chanting, signed Ichirakusai; the fourteenth the warrior-monk Benkei carrying three small oni in a conch-shell, signed Ryugetsu; the fifteenth Ikkaku Sennin carrying the Indian whore across the River Ganges, signed Gyokkosai; the sixteenth a toy-seller with two karako, signed Tomomasa; the seventeenth a standing samurai on a base, signed Yoshimasa; the eighteenth a wandering priest chanting and beating a mokugyo, signed with a kao; the nineteenth Hotei in his bath attended by Benten, signed Eikyu
