The pure silver tsuba of irregular form, finely carved in high relief with a peony, the details of the stamens and calyxes in gilt, signed Tenkodo Hidekuni; the pure gold fuchi-kashira carved in high relief with peonies, the fuchi signed Tenkodo Hidekuni; the pure gold kojiri formed as a peony, signed Hidekuni

Lot Essay

Accompanied by a certificate of registration as a Juyo Tosogu [Important Sword-Fitting] issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai [Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Art Sword] on 11 October 2001

Kawarabayashi Hidekuni (1825-1891) was born in Hoki (Tottori prefecture) and moved to Kyoto at the age of 18 to study under Kawarabayashi Hideoki, of the Otsuki School. He married Hideoki's daughter and became his successor.
