An Intricate Pair of Figures of Hotei and Ebisu
Signed Tokoku, Taisho Period (1917)
Made up of carved sections of boxwood, kurogaki [black persimmon], ivory, lacquer, silver and other materials, Daikoku holding a sack and mallet and Ebisu with a bream and fishing-rod, the figure of Daikoku signed on the base Taisho hinoto-mi fuyu Tokoku Fuzui [Tokoku Fuzui, in the hinoto-mi year of Taisho (1917)] with an inlaid red-lacquer seal Tokoku, the fishing-rod missing except for the handle

Lot Essay

Suzuki Tokoku of Tokyo is known to have lived until at least 1912, but this signature establishes that he (or a successor of the same name) was still active in 1917.
