Lot Essay

As in some previous Lots the links with reality are tenuous: the harbour appears to be that of Marseilles, and the accompanying text by the author Kanagaki Robun tells that the city of Paris has a great castle by the ocean surmounted by a gold statue of the founder king and that the nation has enjoyed a great revival thanks to Napoleon Bonaparte. Another impression is illustrated in Yokohama Kenritsu Hakubutsukan [Yokohama Prefectural Museum], Yokohama ukiyo-e (Yokohama, 1979), p. 100.
