Specialist note

With its dependence on the rich figuring of the mahogany and simple ormolu mouldings, together with tamed lion's-mask ring handles, this gueridon table is designed in the restrained 'Etruscan' style of the 1790's. In character, it resembles the documented oeuvre of Bernard Molitor, who is known to have supplied similarly restrained furniture with lion-mask ring-pull handles (U. Leben, B. Molitor, London, 1992, p.180, no.19, p.193, fig.85 and p.197, fig.99).
