AN ITALIAN WHITE-METAL-MOUNTED AND POLYCHROME-DECORATED WORK-BOX
Late 18th Century, probably Neapolitan
The rectangular padded top with white-metal thread embroidered green silk, the hinged top opening to reveal a fitted interior elaborately painted with oval portrait reliefs of an Officer and his betrothed, each above sliding ends hiding secret drawers and painted with foliate cartouches on an aubergine ground, the base with a portrait of their child, the lid with central mirror flanked by scenes of their courting, the rectangular body painted with scenes of a cavalry engagement, a courting couple and charity on a yellow ground, the borders painted with entwined foliate motifs, the underside with labels '172' and '362', the mirror plate cracked
