A RARE LETTER OF A DISTINGUISHED REVOLUTIONARY WAR OFFICER

Armand, a French officer who volunteered his services to the American cause, writes to Colonel Wood in the midst of active campaigning: "Mr. McDougall qt. master to the legion has found out a quantity of fother [sic] which may be obtained immediately. Our horses having had but a very insignificant allowance of long feed since at this post are in the greatest want of that article. I request you would do your endeavors in procuring the fother [fodder] above mentioned in the shortest time possible."

Charles Armand was a veteran French soldier when commissioned a Colonel in the Continental Army on 10 March 1777. He organized a small legion of Frenchmen and fought at Short Hills, Bradywine and Monmouth, and wintered at Valley Forge; his detachment was asssigned to the Pulaski Legion in February of 1780. He served under Gates at the humiliating Battle of Camden and was ultimately appointed a Brigadier General on 28 March 1783. Armand "was one of the few foreign officers who impressed Washington" (Bostner).

Letters of this distinguished soldier are extremely rare.
