[CIVIL WAR]. CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA. Sword belt plate, 2-piece tongue and wreath, Virginia style. 1 7/8 x 3¼ in., even brown patina, tongue slightly bent, apparently recovered from the ground at a Civil War site. The tongue and wreath sword belt plate was typically worn by Confederate officers of all ranks. Although there was a standard pattern for this type of plate, there were several variants which identify the manufacturer or region of manufacture. This plate is "Virginia style" (#006 in Steve Mullinax's Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates). It was produced in one of the many small shops across Virginia which worked tirelessly to provide military supplies for the Confederacy.
