SEUTTER, Georg Matthäus (1678-1757). Atlas Novus sive tabulae geographicae totius orbis faciem. Augsburg: [ca.1735].
2o (540 x 320 mm). Hand-colored engraved title, 4 pages letterpress geographical description with engraved headpiece, and pasted-on engraved index at foot of final page, 29 engraved double-page maps ALL COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND. (Title with perforated stamp and light wear to edges, first leaf with library stamp, a few maps with old marginal repairs, some minor marginal dampstaining.) Modern quarter morocco.
The first edition of this atlas (with 16 maps) was published in 1720. The maps include the World, Europe, Asia, Africa and America, maps of all the European countries, and a map of the Holy Land. The number of maps in each atlas was variable according to the wishes of the purchaser. Seutter was apprenticed to J. B. Homann in 1687 in Nuremberg, then worked as an engraver for the publisher J. Wolff in Augsburg, before setting up his own map and globe business in the same city.
