(Some occasional mostly marginal pale dampstaining and spotting.) 19th-century quarter morocco, blue boards (light wear). Provenance: Clement Amat (bookplate); Paul Colomb de Matines (gift inscription dated 15 January 1837 on front pastedown to); "Mr. l'abbe James"; Estelle Doheny (morocco bookplate; purchased from Maggs Bros., London, 5 June 1944); donated to SMS 1944.

Although attributed to Augustine in manuscripts and early printed editions, the Sermones ad heremitas are not considered to be the Saint's work. The collection, which is not attested before the 13th century, was first published in Modena in 1477. Thirteen incunable editions, ten of them printed in Italy and three in Italian translation, reflect the popularity of the text in the period when this manuscript was printed.
