Hand-colored engraved frontispiece, engraved dedication, engraved title to the Atlas géographique and 895 (of 902) engraved plates as described below (foxed.) Text bound in contemporary half calf (worn, some spines with losses); atlases bound in contemporary diced russia, covers richly gilt with Egyptian motifs (worn, some covers detached). Provenance: Algernon Perkins (armorial bookplate in text); "PH" (gilt bookplate in atlases); Jay Gould (1836-1892), American financier (Lyndhurst bookplate).
Second edtion of this important work, the greatest of the scientific publications by the French government detailing the results of exploration in Egypt. Comprising:
Antiquités. Text: Vol. 10 (of 10) only. Plates: 5 volumes with hand-colored engraved frontispiece and 423 plates, including 4 unnumbered plates (lacking plates 20 and 21 bis and the map). This part contains the ruins and the objects excavated there.
Etat Moderne. Text: 10 volumes (vol. 18 in three parts). Plates: 2 volumes with 176 engraved plates, including 16 plates on 8 sheets with a transcript of the inscription of the Rosetta Stone, Syrian coins, etc. (lacking the map and plates XXXII, B and G). This part describes the architecture of Egypt, particularly Cairo. Other sections detail costume, vases, furniture and medals.
Histoire Naturelle. Text: 6 volumes. Plates: 2 volumes with 244 engraved plates. The principle sections of this part comprise geology and physical geography, mammals and flora. Artists include Barrabard, Prêtre, Redouté and Turpin.
Atlas géographique. Engraved title, engraved "key" map, engraved characters, a general map on three sheets and a detailed map on 47 sheets.
