Lot Essay

COMPARATIVE LITERATURE:
Peter Hornsby, Pewter of the Western World 1600-1850, Schiffer Publishing Ltd, 1983.
One of a pair of very similar lacquered chestnut urns is illustrated on page 55, plate 84. These examples are also Dutch, circa 1800, in this case the bodies decorated in the Chinoiserie style. According to Hornsby the Chinese style of lacquered decoration of pewter was popular in Germany and Holland, and rarely used elsewhere.
