Further details
In 1980, as a last request for Aimé Maeght, Chagall, with the help of Charles Sorlier, created an outstanding suite of fourteen lithographs. These lithographs (Lots 234-41) are exceptional not only because of their unusually large size but also because of their intense radiance of colour and joy. The subjects depicted are typical of the artist's own mythology, a mixture of the poetic nostalgia of his Russian heritage which he floats through the Parisian skies or infuses with the colours of the Cote d'Azure. The dominant colours in the series are pastel, except with 'Creation' (Lot 234) where Chagall decided to retain the immediate strength of his black and white drawing.
