Lot Essay

This form of cup and saucer does not appear to be recorded in the literature. For a cup and saucer of peach-shaped section see Geneviève Le Duc, Porcelaine tendre de Chantilly au XVIIIe siècle (Paris, 1996), p. 111 and for a Chelsea Kakiemon cup and saucer of similar form see Ayers, Impey, Mallet et. al, 'Porcelain for Palaces, The Fashion for Japan in Europe 1650-1750', British Museum Exhibition Catalogue (London, 1990), p. 280, no. 328. In both cases the shape of the saucer echoes that of the cup, but with the present lot the saucers are of a different shape, perhaps because the extraordinary and complex form of the cups would not have translated well to the saucers. See Geneviève Le Duc, ibid, p. 109 for pieces with very similar decoration, almost certainly inspired by the engravings of Jean-Antoine Fraisse published in 1735 under the title Livre de desseins chinois, tirés d'après des originaux de Perse, des Indes, de la Chine et du Japon...
