For 1913, Humber revived the Humberette theme, which had proved successful and firmly established the company a decade earlier. The Edwardian Humberette, as with its forebear catered perfectly for the more affordable motoring market, and was simply better built than many of the contemporary 'cyclecar' competitors. Mechanically it was superior in that it had shaft drive, where so many others were plagued by the problems inherent in belt driven designs, enabling it to climb hills, and its 1 litre engine provided a healthy turn of speed, being quoted at around 35 mph.
Between its debut and the outbreak of War, it is believed that more than 2,000 Humberettes had been built, but sadly the survival rate of these is very modest, and only a few dozen are known in club circles today.
This car was originally registered in the jurisdiction of Essex County Council, but its subsequent pre-war history is not known. Some history on file notes ownership and some restoration in the mid-1950s before it came into the present family in March 1957. It later underwent a sympathetic restoration and was then used in Veteran Car Club events.
Although not used in recent years, the car has just been re-commissioned prior to the sale and is offered with a new MoT. Cosmetically any work that has been carried out previously has mellowed with age and it now carries a charming patina.
Complete with hood in double duck, as it did when new, the Humberette offers enjoyable motoring for a modest outlay, and entry to events of the Veteran Car Club, and Vintage Sports Car Club.
