Lot Essay

A preliminary drawing for Vanni's altarpiece in the church of San Francesco in Pisa, dateable to circa 1592. Another compositional drawing, with fewer putti, the female saint replaced by Saint John the Evangelist, and two attendant angels lower left, is in the Uffizi (P.A. Riedl, Disegni dei Barocceschi Sienesi, Florence, 1976, no. 2). The drawing in Florence is closer to the painted composition.
Another related drawing is in the Biblioteca Communale in Siena and a bozzetto is in the Chigi Saraceni collection also in Siena.
The attribution of this drawing was first suggested by Sir John Pope-Hennessy and later confirmed by John Gere and Philip Pouncey.
