Lot Essay

Sir Denis Mahon and the late Dr. Stephen Pepper confirmed the attribution to Guido Reni. Dr. Pepper dated the drawing to the 1620s, comparing its firm contours and crisp hatching to a drawing of Holofernes in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (J. Bean, 17th Century Italian Drawings in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1979, no. 317) and to another of the head of Saint Francis in the National Gallery of Art, Washington (V. Birke, Guido Reni, exhib. cat., Vienna, Albertina, 1981, no. 91, fig. 19).
