Lot Essay

Drawn by Richter for the third installment of his series of woodcuts intended to be contemplative ('beschaulich') and edifying ('erbaulich') for a family audience. The composition was revisited by Richter in a watercolour, dated 1870 and with minor differences of detail, now in the Stiftung Ratjen, Vaduz, formerly in the collection of Alexander Flinsch; C.G. Boerner, Leipzig, 29-30 November 1912, lot 66, illustrated in colour.
We are grateful to Dr. Hinrich Sieveking for his kind help in preparing this note.
