A good 19th-Century lacquered-brass field microscope,
unsigned, in a fishskin-covered case -- 10.5cm. (4 1/8in.) wide
See Colour Illustration
Three objective lenses are held in separate brass mounts arranged to swivel into place over or under the eyepiece aperture. They are mounted on a shaped limb at the top of a pillar. The circular stage is held on a sleeve which slides up and down the pillar, and incorporates a slider holder beneath. The pillar fits into a brass ferrule mounted on the oval lignum vitae base, fixed in place by a small brass pin. A hole is drilled in the base to accept the concave substage mirror. The microscope is stored with a live box and two ivory sliders, each with four specimen cells, in a wooden case. The case is lined with green velvet and covered in black fishskin. It has two brass hooks and eyes and a domed lid.
