A 19th-Century lacquered-brass compound binocular microscope,
signed on the foot CARY STRAND LONDON, with a customized mahogany carrying case -- 47cm. (18½in.) high

The binocular body-tube has rack and pinion adjustment to the eyepieces, rack and pinion focusing with micrometer fine adjustment, a sliding prism, and a triple nosepiece. The mechanical stage has a graduated circumference. There is an oil immersion substage condensor by W. Watson & Sons, and a plano-concave substage mirror. The main limb tilts on an axis between two brass upright supports to the Y-shaped foot. Accessories include: a table-standing bull's-eye condensor (no base); Cary objctives 3in., 2in., 1in., ½in. and 1/8in., each in a brass conister with an engraved lid, a BOTTOM PRISM attachment kept in a similar can; Watson 1in., 2/3in., 1/6in. and metallurgical 1/8in. objectives; and some other unrelated items. The glazed mahogany carrying case has been adapted from the case for a slightly smaller microscope with grained plywood added around the bottom of the as an extension.The case has a brass carrying handle and key.
And a quantity of unused glass slides, a bottle of cedarwood oil and some mica discs, in a cigar box, and four pine slide boxes, total capacity 388 slides, with a approximately 216 slide preparations, some with labels for Ernest Heath, Charles Bourgogne, W. Watson & Sons, E. Wheeler, E. Hinton and others (6)
