A PAIR OF GEORGE II WALNUT OPEN ARMCHAIRS
Each with a waved cresting centred by a shell above a baluster-shaped splat, with arched stiles and 'shepherd's crook' shaped arms above a later needlework-covered padded seat depicting sheep in a landscape, on cabriole legs headed by acanthus, on ball-and-claw feet, one shoe replaced, one with depository label printed 'N3246', both with red 'H' label, one ear replaced (2)

Lot Essay

Related 'India-back' parlour chairs formed part of Mrs. D. Gubbay's collection (J. Shurmer, Clandon Park, London, 1995, p. 23). The same patterned arms and flowered back-rails featured on a related chair in the Percival D. Griffiths collection (R. W. Symonds, English Furniture from Charles II to George II, London, 1929, p. 149, fig. 96); and on another single armchair that was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 12 June 2002, lot 160 (£53,775).
