Lot Essay

The form of this commode is closely associated with the group that have been attributed to Henry Hill (d. 1778) of Marlborough and a pair of commodes attributed to him are at Corsham Court, Wiltshire and may have been supplied after 1760, when he was employed at the house (L. Wood, 'Furniture for Lord Delaval: Metropolitan and Provincial', Furniture History, Leeds, 1990, p. 206, fig. 24). A commode, almost identical to the present lot, was with Stuart & Turner Ltd., in 1938 and sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 14 June 1985, lot 94 (L. Wood, Catalogue of Commodes, London, 1994, p. 72, fig. 58, no. XXI) and another closely related commode is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, no. W.55-1937 (M. Tomlin, Catalogue of Adam Period Furniture, London, 1972, p. 180).

A related commode was sold anonymously [Property of a Family Trust], in these Rooms, 2 May 2002, lot 77 (£20,315). Another similar commode was sold anonymously, Phillips London, 27 june 2000, lot 78 (£29,700).
