Lot Essay

The bookcase with its columnar corners and triumphal-arched glazing bars is conceived in the antique or Roman fashion, while its clustered-pillars and arcade-cresting introduce the late 18th century Elizabethan Gothic fashion promoted by the court architect James Wyatt (d. 1813). Its glazing patterns, with cusped, foliated and pointed arches, featured in The Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices, 1788, pl. 16, nos 2 and 6.

Chairs provided en suite with this bookcase are offered as lot 111 in this sale.
