Lot Essay
The table is conceived in the George III 'Roman' fashion with its hinged and reed-moulded oval top mosaic-parquetried with a ribbon-banded oval medallion of richly-figured mahogany. Poetic oval bas-reliefs of Palmyreen 'Apollo' sunflowered libation-paterae cap its taper-hermed and plinth-supported pilasters, which are sunk with rounded reed mouldings. The pattern and ornament introduced in the 1770s later featured in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788 (pl. 62) issued by Messrs A. Hepplewhite & Co. They noted that such 'Pembroke Tables ... may be of various shapes. The long square and oval are the most fashionable. These articles admit of considerable elegance in the workmanship and ornaments'. The particular form of the bas-relief medallions has been associated with the firm of Messrs Mayhew and Ince.
