A TURKISH SCIMITAR, AND AN ARAB CUTLASS
The first early 19th Century
The first with curved single-edged hollow-ground European blade (scattered surface pitting) retaining traces of gilding and etched on both faces for half its length with foliage, a caryatid and a figure of a knight in armour, the ricasso inscribed on one side 'Coulaux Frères' and on the other 'Klingenthal', silver guard engraved with foliage, and dark horn grips, in leather-covered wooden scabbard, the parcel-gilt silver mounts en suite with the guard, Turkish silver hallmarks; the second with slightly curved single-edged blade double-edged at the point and with two broad fullers on each face, and maker's stamp on one side at the forte, iron stirrup-hilt with 'slotted' knuckle-guard and Arabic inscriptions on the langets, ribbed dark horn grips, and shaped iron pommel, in iron-mounted leather-covered wooden scabbard
