TWO ENGLISH HANGERS
Late 17th Century
The first with curved hollow-ground single-edged saw-backed blade, iron hilt comprising short straight quillons with vertically recurved lobe-shaped tips, bonnet-shaped cap-pommel with pierced button, and grip formed of two natural staghorn scales sandwiching the tang, and at the base, an iron ferrule with a tongue-like projection chiselled with a profile laurel-crowned head, the iron parts chiselled and engraved throughout with conventional foliage; the second with curved single-edged blade, each face chisellled with a panel of foliated scrollwork at the base and struck with a maker's mark, a profile head in an oval, the iron hilt comprising short rear quillon with lobe-shaped tip, slender knuckle-guard, and bonnet-shaped cap-pommel with pierced button flanked by a pair of chiselled horses' forequarters
