AN ENGLISH SILVER-HILTED HUNTING HANGER
London silver hallmarks for 1772
With stout broad straight hollow-ground saw-backed blade (some surface rust), double-edged towards the point, the stirrup hilt with broad vertically fluted knuckle-guard, narrow gadrooned shaped side-loop, and scallop-shaped rear quillon (bent), pommel cast and chased as a lion's head, and ivory grip sown with pyramidal-headed silver studs, in original leather-covered wooden scabbard (leather rubbed) with silver locket and chape, the former with a frog-stud and bearing the pricked signature 'Cullum Charing Cross', silversmith's mark of William Kinman

Lot Essay

William Kinman was a prominent silver hilt maker and a leading member of the London Founders' Company. He entered his first mark at Goldsmiths' Hall in 1759, and is last recorded in 1806. James Cullum (1711-86) was the founder of the leading firm of royal sword-cutlers, recorded at Charing Cross from 1741 to 1795. See Leslie Southwick, London Silver-hilted Swords, pp. 84-5, 159-60
