A GEORGIAN OFFICER'S PRESENTATION SWORD

The sword of Light Cavalry style, with wide steeply-curved flat-sided blade bearing traces of blueing and gilding, one side inscribed 'S Brunn Sword Cutler &c to his RH the Prince of Wales, 56 Charing Cross' and bearing etched decoration including royal arms, royal cypher and classical figures, the other side bearing the inscription 'Presented by the Non-Commissioned Officers, Drummers and Privates of the Durham Regiment of Militia to Major Byers as a mark of Respect they entertain for him', gilt-brass single-bar guard, langets embossed with female faces, fine chequered ivory grip and gilt-brass backstrap incorporating lion's head pommel (hilt slightly loose but apparently not re-fixed), in its gilt-brass scabbard with ornate rings and pointillé decoration, the front face inscribed with maker's name and the same dedication as on the blade
