A George II walnut bracket timepiece
Joseph Smith, Chester. Circa 1730
The case with baluster handle to inverted bell top, glazed sides, the front door with herringbone inlay around the dial, similar herringbone inlay to the solid rear door, the dial signed Joseph Smith Chester on a circular plaque in the arch flanked by foliate spandrels, silvered chapter ring with pierced steel hands, the matted centre engraved with foliage, later turned brass ring applied to the winding hole, Indian mask-and-foliate spandrels, the movement with five ringed pillars, single gut fusee, knife-edge verge escapement, now lacking the calendar ring, plain back plate, pull quarter repeat train removed.
