Lot Essay

This armoire is painted with several layers of decoration, with overall brown paint, blue paint on the door mouldings and blue borders to suggest panels on the sides. Probably made in oak or sweet chestnut (timber not visible) it has a wide decoratively moulded border around the front edges and a simple flat cornice or chapeau above in a manner common to armoires from Brittany made during the 18th and 19th centuries. This example probably had extended feet which have now been removed and later 'sledge' feet added, to raise it above the floor. The vertical raised panels in the doors are unusual and a rare variant of the Breton Armoire.
