Lot Essay

Eleanor Carne was born on the 13th November, 1769. The only child of Rev. John Carne Nash by Eleanor his wife, daughter of Richard Carne, Esq. This picture was painted by Sir Thomas Lawrence, President of the Royal Society of Bath, when he was only 17 years old and Eleanor was only 14 years old. She later married Thomas Markham, Esq. of Cheltenham on the 29th August, 1790. Eleanor died at Nash on the 10th October, 1842 at the age of 73.
