We are very grateful to Drs Heleen Vieveen of the Iconografisch Bureau of the RKD, The Hague, for noting that this portrait is of Johan de Witt (1625-1672), Grand Pensionary of Holland. The composition is taken from that of the painting of de Witt by Jan de Baen in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; the interior in the background represents the assembly hall of the states of Holland and West Friesland.
