Lot Essay

We are very grateful to Everett Fahy, who on the basis of a photograph, suggested in 1997 that this triptych is by one of the local painters influenced by Giotto who worked in the lower church of San Francesco at Assisi: he points to iconographic and stylistic parallels in a triptych formerly in the von Kaufmann collection, Berlin (F. Todini, La pittura umbra dal Duecento al primo Cinquecento, Milan, 1989, II, fig. 207, as the Master of the Perugia Madonna), and characterizes the picture as falling in style between Puccio Capanna, who worked in Assisi, and Meo da Sienna, who was based at Perugia by 1319.
