Portrait of Amakusa Shiro,

The Christian flags flying from the black ships and from the castle keep in the background suggest that the subject in this portrait is Amakusa Shiro (d.1638). Amakusa Shiro was the leader of the peasant uprising known as the Shimabara Rebellion of 1637-38.
