A Model Of The Naval Brigantine Dolphin of 1836
Wm. E. Hitchcock; American, ca. 1986
A scale model of this interesting early U.S. Naval brigantine. The hull of the model is built up in plank on frame construction with basswood frames which are planked over in mahogany to the waterline. Some of the planking has been left off of each side to show the frame construction. Above the waterline the model is completely finished and painted black with a white band across the gun ports to the cap rail. The deck of the model is planked in basswood, with the caulk line blackened and pin holes to represent the fasteners. The deck of the model is well detailed and includes the following: anchors, anchor rodes, pin & fife rails, stove pipe, belaying pins, deck gratings, water barrels, troughs, coils of line, ships boats lashed amidships, 10 cannons rigged on carriages, capstan, skylight, square binnacle, tiller, rudder, etc. The model is well rigged with bow sprit, fore & main masts, standing and running rigging. These details include: bowsprit, dolphin stryker, fore stays, intermediate stays, ratlines affixed to deadeyes, cross spars, stun'sail booms, topping lifts, bracing lines, main boom, gaff, halyards and numerous other rigging details. The model is displayed on a linen covered board with a pair of brass pedestals, on a mahogany base with a plexiglass cover.
40 x 15 x 57¾ in. (101.6 x 38.1 x 146.8 cm.) cased dimensions on stand.
