Archibald Carey Smith was a marine painter but most noted as a yacht designer. Born in New York City on September 4th, 1837, he learned the shipwright's trade and practiced it in New York City until the mid-sixties. From about 1867 to 1877 he devoted himself mainly to marine painting, which he has studied under the noted Dutch/American
artist Mauritz Frederick Hendrick de Haas. After 1877 he did little painting, devoting himself almost entirely to the designing of yachts and other craft. He died in Bayonne, New Jersey on December 8, 1911.
