Lot Essay

The picture was attributed to Coxie by Max Friedländer; the composition is taken from the picture in the Accademia, Florence, commissioned by Cardinal Pompeo Colonna in Rome and given by him to his physician, Jacopo da Carpi, in Florence; the Accademia picture is from the workshop of Raphael, although scholars are divided as to whether the specific hand is that of Giulio Romano or Giovan Francesco Penni.
