Lot Essay

Lady Sophia Burdett was the third and youngest daughter of Thomas Coutts. She married Sir Francis Burdett, 5th Bt., MP (1770-1844) in 1793. Lady Burdett and her sisters Lady Bute and Lady Guilford were all painted by Sir Thomas Lawrence.
Sir Martin Arthur Shee studied at the Drawing School, Dublin, and at the R.A. School. After experimenting with historical subjects, he turned to portrait painting and went on to paint members of the Royal Family including the Queen. The present work is a particularly fine example of Shee's portrait style, showing the influence of Sir Thomas Lawrence.
