1950 NORTON MANX MODEL 30M MOTORCYCLE
Frame No. E11M 28483
Engine No. E11M 27278
Black frame with silver and black tanks
Engine: single cylinder, twin overhead cam, 500cc; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: Roadholder front forks, rear plunger type; Brakes: front and rear drum.
1950 was a great year for Norton as they came first, second and third in that year's T.T. Norton were also the 1950 World Champions in the manufacturers 500cc class and side-car class. "The unapproachable Norton" was described in their 1950 advertising as being "the World's best roadholder". Other adverts highlighted their racing successes in the Senior T.T., Junior T.T., Daytona, Belgian Grand Prix, Leinster 100, North West 200, Ulster Grand Prix, Grand Prix des Nations and the Swiss Grand Prix. They were having great success on the track despite being challenged by the rival multi-cylinder machines. In 1950 Manxes had, for the first time, aluminum tanks, magnesium wheels and a double-knocker cambox.
In recent years this bike has been in the collection of Ronald Weaver who purchased it from England. The machine is finished in silver and black and fitted with BTH magneto, Avon Speedmaster tires and 8,000rpm Smiths tachometer, megaphone exhaust, and adjustable Roadholder front forks. A gauze screen is fitted along with roundels for racing numbers and quick release oil and fuel caps. Benefiting from a high quality restoration in 2000 by Manx Norton specialist, Bernie Allen of Wiltshire, England, this great machine has not yet been ridden since restoration, therefore making it an ideal show piece or potential contender for historic bike events.
