While the new E-Type had understandably received rave reviews at the Geneva Show, the anticipation of the new cars arriving in the US was no doubt dreaded by the American manufacturers while Jaguar Cars Inc. geared up for another public relations coup. The New York International Auto Show was held in April 1961 and to say the two models shown, roadster and fastback coupe, were the show sensations is an understatement. The Jaguar was an immediate hit. Six were sold within thirty minutes of the New York show's opening. This showing of the car was accompanied by all the pomp and circumstance Jaguar and the auto show management could muster, an acknowledgement of the importance of the US market to Jaguar.

Owing to a lack of supply, it was some months before journalists were allowed to test the E-Type and the early testing happened in the UK. The first Road & Track road test appeared in the September 1961 issue, the Americans referring to the cars as the Jaguar XK-E. Their introduction under the header "Sensational is the word for this Coventry Cat" reads as follows, If a new car ever created greater excitement around our office than the new Jaguar XK-E, we can't remember it. And to sum up this car in the third sentence of a report may be unusual for us, but it is easy to do. "The car comes up to, and exceeds, all our great expectations." By 1963, one third of Jaguar's cars were being sold to American customers. The E-type is also one of the few cars that has reached the status of owning spots in both the Smithsonian Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

We are very pleased to be offering this particular example as it has had the most comprehensive and thorough restoration by marque experts, with every component either rebuilt or replaced as necessary in a full rotisserie restoration. No expense was spared in the restoration process and the result is simply magnificent. The panel fit and finish is exceptional and the opalescent silver paintwork is flawless. The body was completely stripped to bare metal, then the bonnet, doors and boot were matched up to fit perfectly. Everything was epoxy sealed and painted, color sanded and buffed before new rubber, seals, grommets and gaskets all fitted. The trim and brightwork was either replaced or replated and a new correct red leather interior was fitted with new upholstery, dash and trim and a new Stayfast black soft top was put on.
The mechanical restoration was equally exacting; the 3.8 litre engine was rebuilt to factory specification with new pistons, bearings, valves, guides, seals and timing chain. The head was completely rebuilt, as were the carburetors. The clutch has been rebuilt and all new brake parts are fitted, the driveshaft balanced, shock absorbers rebuilt and new suspension components fitted. Most of the parts have been powder coated prior to reassembly. All the electrical system is new with a new harness, gauges, knobs and switches all rebuilt as necessary. The gas tank was restored and epoxy sealed. The soft top hood bows and seat frames were all powder coated and a new Triplex windshield was fitted. Finally a new exhaust system was fitted up to the car. A DVD showing some of the restoration process is offered with the car.

This is an original matching numbers Jaguar 3.8 litre E-Type finished to the highest standards possible and outstanding throughout. The car has traveled just some 50 miles since the restoration. The quality needs to be seen to be fully appreciated and the color scheme of Opalescent silver paintwork with red leather is outstanding. This car is a fabulous example of the definitive Jaguar sports car.
