Lot Essay

Helen McKie designed two almost identical posters in this theme for the centenary of the opening of Waterloo Station in 1948. This poster depicts the commuters in civilian clothes, entitled 'Peace'; the second poster entitled 'War' depicts the characters in war-time uniforms. In addition to designing posters for Southern Railways Mckie designed uniforms and upholstery as well as illustrating booklets and other publicity material.
