Lot Essay

In December 1949 Donald Friend arrived in Naples. From there he made a visit to the island of Ischia, where fellow Australian painter Jeffrey Smart was living in the mountain-top village of Testaccio. The sitter for this delightful and rare portrait was probably one of the local Ischian boys.
