Lot Essay

The thick pieces of wood, fine details on the feet and the simple design justifies earlier dating, unusual in zitan pieces. See a huanghuali table with similar lattice-design in the possesion of Dr. Gustave Ecke, illustrated by G. Kates, Chinese Household Furniture, New York, 1962, fig. 40. See, also, a related zitan table with similar lattice-work and recessed legs, illustrated by Wang Shixiang, Connoisseurship of Chinese Furniture: Ming and Early Qing Dynasties, Hong Kong, 1990, vol. II, p. 92, B71.
