Lot Essay
Souza arrived in London in 1949 and in his early years created a few works that captured the city skyline. These early cityscapes are linear and orderly and do not show the distortions characteristic of some later paintings.
Souza's use of colors suffuses the work with a wonderful light that resonates even in the darker areas. The painting resembles a medieval stained glass window with brilliant blues and blacks that glow as if lit from a hidden source. The small patch of red lights up the entire painting and is reflected in the window adjacent to it and in the triangular tip of the tower.
