Lot Essay

The Daniells' sketches of animals have particular charm. Representations of elephants, camels, water-buffaloes, rhinoceros and alligators - amongst others - were especially intriguing to the British public, as in the late eighteenth century many of these species were still unknown or rarely seen in Europe.
