Lot Essay

The present watercolour stylistically shows the influence of the work of George Chinnery, whom Smith was likely to have met whilst serving as an Aide de Camp in Calcutta, where Chinnery was resident from 1802-1825. The building depicted is a typical Himalayan gabled house.

For a note on the artist please see lot 26, and for other works by the artist please see lots 27, 28, 82 and 85.
