This watercolour can be dated between 1828 and 1830 as the infantry marching along the riverside wear red coats, which were changed to grey after 1830. They can be seen alighting from palanquins and making their way to the Royal Barracks (built in 1764), on the far left of the watercolour. St Peter's Church (consecrated in 1828) is to the right of the barracks, and next to this is the striking Ochterlony monument. This was erected in 1828 to commemorate the East India Company's victory in the Nepal Campaign of 1814-16. It was named in honour of Sir David Ochterlony, Bt. (1758-1825), the British general who had exhibited diplomatic as well as military prowess.
