A Large Dagger (O-Tanto) in Mounting (Koshirae) with Goto-School Fittings
Edo period (17th century), blade attributed to Shitahara Yasushige, tsuba signed Chikusensai Kazuyoshi and with kao (cursive monogram) and the fuchi-kashira signed Renjo saku and Mitsuyoshi and with kao (cursive monogram) [Goto Renjo (1628-1708), tenth mainline Master of the Goto school of metalworkers]
The blade hirazukuri (flat sided) configuration with iori-mune (shallow-peaked back) and very slight torii-zori curvature (center of the arc is roughly mid-point of the back of the blade) with the point o-kissaki (large point); the forging pattern itame (wood grain) and the tempered edge a narrow even suguba (parallel to the back of the blade); carved on the outside with bo-hi ni tsure-hi (wider groove with a narrow parallel groove below) and on the inside with futatsu no hi (parallel grooves); the tip medium rounded with a turnback; the tang wide and tapering with a rounded end toward the front; double habaki; two peg holes

The koshirae comprising a saya (scabbard) lacquered in red with black and gold details simulating cherry bark and fitted with a shakudo nanako kurikata (cord holder), uragawa (strip beneath the kozuka) and kaeri decorated with gamboling horses in gold, silver and shakudo, the kojiri (hardware on the tip) finished in shakudo; the tsuka (handle) mounted with a pair of menuki and fuchi-kashira decorated en suite to the other fittings; the tsuba (sword guard) a shakudo plate with parcel-gilt autumn grasses in low relief and rimmed with gold in a "scratched" finish; the kozuka (utility blade) similarly decorated with horses on a shakudo nanako ground, the blade signed illegibly and with kao (cursive monogram) and the kogai (hair pin) gilt-bronze with irises and rocks

With a Hozon Token (Sword Worthy of Preserving) certificate no. 358431, dated 2000.12.21 for the blade and a Tokubetsu Hozon Tosugu (Sword-Fittings Particularly Worthy of Preserving) certificate no. 225883, dated 2001.2.16 for the fittings, both issued by Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (Society for the Preservation of Japan Art Swords)
